Everything you need to know about tickets, travel, and the medieval experience in Hova.

Welcome

Experience the Middle Ages in Hova | July 4–12

Welcome to the 35th edition of Hova Medieval Week! Since 1990, Hova has been transformed every summer into a vibrant medieval village, transporting visitors back to the historic year of 1275. Entry to the village is free of charge, where you’ll be met by patrolling city guards, jesters, and talented craftsmen showcasing their traditional skills in the bustling marketplace. Authentic scents of historical cuisine and the sounds of period music complete the immersive experience, offering a magical atmosphere for visitors of all ages to explore.

The grand highlight of the week is the spectacular jousting tournament, where knights on horseback meet in daring duels just outside the village gates. While younger adventurers enjoy the medieval playground and daily shows, the entire family can experience the unique spirit of chivalry created by the Hova Riddarvecka association and local partners. It is a nine-day celebration of history and craftsmanship that brings the legend of the Middle Ages to life.

History

The battle of Hova

The Medieval Knight Week at Hova is inspired by the battle of Hova in 1275. When king Birger Jarl died in 1266 his oldest son Valdemar became king. Valdemar had three brothers and two of these were not pleased to see Valdemar become king. Magnus and Erik wanted more power, and this caused a dispute between the three brothers.

In the year 1274, the dispute turned into an armed battle. Magnus and Erik received help from the Danish king Erik Kipping who offered an army of Danish and German mercenary soldiers and knights. King Valdemar’s army mainly had soldiers that were former farmers.  Here, at Hova, is where the two armies fought their battle. It was an uneven battle and King Valdemar’s army lost against the well-trained mercenary soldiers and knights.

In the end, King Valdemar was thrown in prison and had to give the crown to his brother Magnus who later became Magnus Ladulås.
